Switzerland, officially the Swiss Confederation, is bordered by Germany to the north, France to the west, Austria and Liechtenstein to the east, and Italy to the south. Bern is the federal city and the seat of the national government. Switzerland is composed of 26 cantons, some of which have a history of federation that goes back more than 700 years, putting them among the world's oldest surviving republics.
